Having rediscovered social bookmarking site, Delicious, which I mentioned in a post in April, I was surprised to receive an email from them explaining that they were abandoning ‘stacks’ and reverting to tags. The explanation is as follows:
We introduced stacks last year as a visually rich way to think about your links and we’ve been blown away by the amazing content you’ve created. But given the upcoming launch of new products from Delicious’ parent company, AVOS, and our focus on simplifying the Delicious site, we realized the value of stacks is limited for our users moving forward.
Slightly mysterious and not altogether convincing. AVOS took over the running of Delicious from Yahoo! in 2011 and stacks were seen as an interesting innovation, and part of an effort to keep up with the likes of Pinterest and reinvigorate Delicious.
To counteract the loss of stacks, there’s better integration with Facebook through a Facebook Connector which helps add your Facebook links to Delicious, similar to its Twitter Connector launched recently too for your tweeted links. However, it seems to me that Delicious is being downgraded in light of this new (and mysterious) new products launch from AVOS, or perhaps the stacks were not working well. Either way, I don’t think it looks good for Delicious, and it looks like it may well have less appeal for me now.
I’ve finally been catching up with what all the fuzz is about Pinterest, the content sharing service that allows users to ‘pin’ images, videos and others objects to a board, and which is only 2 years old. I’ve set up a board called Web Design World which has 15 pins on it so far consisting of various ‘infographics’ on web design, SEO, the net and social media. Many of these are really neat and sum up a lot of information very nicely. Pinterest provides an effective visual platform and I can see why it became quickly popular with females and crafty types in the states. In the UK, there are more male users and they are slightly younger. In the long run, it will probably balance out as more people use it and find new ways to use it (until its popularity bubble bursts at least, or will it last?).
I hadn’t used social bookmarking site Delicious for a while, but have set up a couple of ‘stacks’ over there, one on Web Design and the other Search Engine World. The last time, I used Delicious there were no stacks, which are clearly modelled on Pinterest’s pins. It’s not a bad place to stick some links to a few of your favourite things. In terms of search engine optimisation, social bookmarking – tagging, saving and sharing links on the web instead of in your private browser – is a highly beneficial way to get high quality one way links to your site, articles or blog. A link on a social bookmark site is likely to be indexed quickly by Google and you can use the tags feature to highlight your relevant keywords.
There is a well thought out list and useful description of The top 35 social bookmarking sites list that will help you raise your site’s rank on the Moneytized blog, which includes Delicious and Pinterest at the top with other established sites, Digg, Reddit and StumbleUpon. Although Twitter, Facebook and Google+ are not really social bookmarking sites, they are included in this list, as they have a social bookmarking role to play. They all help get ‘link juice’. Twitter is considered the most popular of the top 15 social bookmarking sites in an up-to-date list by eBizMBA, with Pinterst at 5 and Delicious at 7.
